Aged to Perfection

South Africa is a treasure trove of possible adventures, from lounging on the beaches of Cape Town to riding in an open-air Land Rover on safari, but what would any exotic getaway be without a nice buzz?  A leisurely tour of South Africa’s Franschhoek region is a must for any wine enthusiast, and two specific vineyards made a particular impact on us during out last trip.

Tucked away in a quiet corner of the Franschhoek Valley, Boekenhoutskloof Vineyards has gained a reputation as one of the top growers in South Africa.  Known mainly for its Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah/Rhone blends, the Chocolate Block 2008 was a highlight because of its smooth yet precise taste with more intense aromas of black raspberry, violet and wood-smoke.

On the more understated end of the spectrum, Rupert & Rothschild’s Barron Edmond 2005 is an exercise in calculated restraint, offering hints of dark fruits with an earthy, relaxed taste; perhaps this is a nod to the Rothschild’s roots in Bordeaux, France.

For those unable to travel to another continent to sample from these purveyors, both are available with a simple click online!
