Cunt-necticut Cantaloupe Cooler

It’s been a long summer at the beach, made even longer by the one bitchy housemate who has slowly dug his way under your skin since Memorial Day, and to whom you have decided you cannot possibly speak to this coming Labor Day weekend without strangling.  If it’s the evening, then we suggest taking your aggression out in the bedroom, but if it’s the morning why not take it out in the kitchen…by making cocktails!  The Showt recently locked several alcoholic trophy wives from Connecticut in our test kitchen until they came up with the perfect Labor Day cocktail to settle your nerves…we call it the Cunt-necticut Cantaloupe Cooler!

For the cantaloupe syrup
-1 cup cantaloupe chunks
-1/2 cup sugar

For the cocktail
-1 1/2 ounces cantaloupe syrup (above)
-1 ounce fresh squeezed lime juice
-1 ounce vodka
-1 mint leaf, plus another for garnish
-Seltzer to top off the glass

Fresh cantaloupe syrup is the secret to this refreshing, passive-aggressive cocktail.  It may seem complicated but the process is actually quite simple and it’s easy to make extra and freeze in an ice cube tray for the future.  To make the cantaloupe syrup, place the chunks of fruit into a food processor. Coarsely chop, then let the machine process until it becomes a smooth puree, about 1 to 2 minutes. Pour into a saucepan and stir in the sugar. Bring to a boil and cook for 1 minute more, until all the sugar has dissolved. Skim foam from top, set aside and let cool.

Strain cooled cantaloupe syrup to remove foam and sediment. You should be left with 1/2 cup of clear, thin syrup. Store in a covered container and store it in the refrigerator to chill.

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add all the cocktail ingredients, then shake like a crying baby. Fill a highball glass with ice and strain the drink into the glass. Top off with seltzer, about 2 ounces worth. Add another splash of vodka, if you’re like us.  Garnish with mint leaf and enjoy!
