Dick and Duane: Still Doing it After 30 Years
In the battle for marriage equality, the presentation of healthy, “normal,” gay couples have been central to changing the hearts and minds of a hitherto reticent straight public. Geriatric lesbians who met at a sock hop in ‘57 are best but late-30’s doctors with complimentary Brooks Brothers sweaters and Pottery Barn ottomans are a close second when it comes to mass-media friendliness. If a toddler is included in the mise en scene, it might as well be the sort of picture that comes with the frame. Then there’s comedy duo Dick and Duane. Let’s just say this couple probably won’t be on PSA’s anytime soon.
Husbands and partners of 30 years, Richard Cohen and Duane Tragis sound like the model of staid domestic tranquility. Luckily, they’re far too entertaining for that. As “Dick and Duane,” the couple has transformed themselves into a veritable gay Rowan and Martin, appearing in clubs, on television, and on Thursday, October 20, at The Laurie Beechman Theater in New York City. A 30th Anniversary celebration, the couple will no doubt share their secret at keeping a long-term marriage fresh, which, knowing these two will involve advice unprintable in any publication that doesn’t want to break obscenity laws. To say these two go blue is as much an exercise in understatement as saying that Cher has had “a little work done.” So, while Dick and Duane may be just too wild and funny to represent gay marriage to the shirking populace at large, it’s the general public’s loss; who could hope for anything more in their romantic future than 30 years of laughter and love. That’s what Dick and Duane are all about.
