Come Showt readers and take a tour through The Museum of Great American Products. Here is a Flowbee, the do-it-yourself hair vacuum. Only a few were killed. Over there we have a Snuggie, the blanket with arms. Dignity sold separately. And up ahead we find our newest exhibit, the Yubz, a cell-phone receiver shaped like a retro landline headset.
You can make utilitarian arguments for the Yubz—it feels natural, the receiver is close to the mouth, you won’t get evil “cell phone radiation”—but let’s get real. The Yubz is all about analog nostalgia and hipster style. And there is a Yubz for you! In addition to the standard colors, Yubz has released a “designer” line of handsets, a whimsical series by graphic artists from around the world. You can even bling out and get the Yubz in glimmering gold or festooned with Swarovski crystals. Get there before Kanye does.
A cell phone receiver masquerading as a landline headset painted like a Scottish tartan or Hipgnosis album jacket? Sounds like one of the most ridiculous, comical, inane, and absurd things one could possibly purchase. And yes, we’re dying to get one.
