Interactive Design from the 22nd-Century

No matter how stylishly appointed, most spaces that surround us in daily life exist inert, stationary, and unchanging. Frankly, most spaces we inhabit don’t give a whit if you’re there or not.  If media artist and design visionary Daan Roosegaarde has his way, that’s all about to change.

As lithe and handsome as the art he creates, Roosegaarde has the distinction of being one of the Netherlands’ most exciting and inventive new creative thinkers.  The core of Studio Roosegaarde’s design philosophy is interactivity. Utilizing the height of modern technology and sophisticated LED lighting, Roosegaarde transforms rooms, tunnels and even clothing into beautiful works of art that respond to the presence and behavior of the viewer, visitor or inhabitant. Ignite rows of phosphorescent brier by merely walking past.  Sport a blouse that shifts transparency as heartbeat increases.  Or wave your hand over a wall of shimmering aluminum pods that open like cybernetic flytraps when you approach. Always transfixing, Roosegaarde’s projects feel like art from the 22nd-Century.  Luckily, he got started slightly earlier…
