The Art of Shiv-alry at Mirror Mirror on The Showt
Meet Shiv Paul – Columnist
That’s right, I’m a London boy transplant here in NYC now living on the West side. I grew up in Epsom, Surrey, near London, famous for hosting Britain’s richest horse race, the Epsom Derby, but sadly, it wasn’t like the Ascot scene from My Fair Lady every day of my childhood.
Today, I work for an international consulting firm as an IT strategy analyst and coaching specialist. Additionally, I have my own personal coaching practice: Authentic Life Rules (www.authenticliferules.com).
How did The Art of Shivalry come about?
As an avid reader of The Showt, I read both issues every week, I saw that they were looking for additional writers to expand their reach. After writing a few articles I met with Ty and the editorial staff and brainstormed about new content for the audience. We came up with the idea for this new advice column along with Sexonymous (link to below) and the dating section.
What can we expect from The Art of Shivalry?
Irreverence with an edge of sophisticated wit. Think of me as a sexy Mary Poppins only less annoying and with better dress sense!
We’ll respond to readers’ problems about sex, dating, relationships or even advise on career and fashion. The advice will be humorous, sometimes tough and include coaching principles.
Each month we’ll choose a Showt boy or girl and readers can write in with suggested date material from their own friend pools. We’ll do the matching and send the lucky duo on a courtesy evening of drinks after which they will report back on whether it was yay or nay.
We’re also going to have a Sexonymous feature where readers can write in and share their sexual escapades with the rest of the Showters. So if you have something to say email us at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
How did you get into this line of work?
I’ve always been the confidant in my friendships, the listener, the advice giver and that has extended to me doing this with both individuals and teams in my day job. I am a trained life/executive coach and much of the principles learned in life coaching are utilized in business too. In my IT line of work I focus on user research and so interview and question people a lot – clients, business sponsors, product users – which involves using similar principles in coaching. In most areas of life what people say they want is rarely what they actually need. When the goal is to get people to the right answers you can be pretty agnostic of the environment. It’s really about getting people to see the truth by getting them to ask themselves the right questions not by telling them your answers.
What hopes do you have for The Art of Shivalry
That it adds value to the readership: makes them laugh and want to interact with the magazine by writing in with their issues or suggesting people for our dating feature. I’d love to do makeover features on it too. Hopefully it will give the readers a sense of community and fun!
