Take a Lick of This Cone
The number of food trucks scattered around New York City has increased significantly over the past few years. Each is more specific and extravagant than the next, but it wouldn’t be New York if the gays didn’t provide their refreshingly sardonic perspective while continuing to raise the bar.
Welcome the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck, a slightly irreverent, uplifting and funny addition to the food truck scene, offering flavors with names like the “Bea Arthur” or the “Salty Pimp.” Having debuted at New York Pride in June of 2009, the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck is the brainchild of professional bassoonist Douglas Quint and his partner, Bryan Petroff. Offering toppings like olive oil, wasabi pea dust, elderflower syrup and cardamom, Mr. Quint and Mr. Petroff appease demanding consumers with wonderful ice cream in an inclusive environment that embraces the Mister Softee tradition with a wink and a smile, all without taking themselves too seriously.
New York may have come full-circle by offering a truck that serves ice cream again, but the new-and-improved version is a delightful addition to the congested scene.
