The 2 Bears Necessities

When the modern homo thinks of a bear, Smokey is not the first thing that comes to mind. While the taxonomy of the gay community’s more hirsute members proliferated in the last decade (cub, otter, wolf, etc..,) nothing quite captures the whole fuzzy lot like the simple moniker of “bear.” Think big, hairy and cute. Coyly broadcasting gay overtones, the pilose and soft-bellied team of Raf Rundell and Joe Goddard (of Hot Chip) are The 2 Bears, and this ursine duo (who often appear, cheekily, in full bear costumes) are reinventing UK club music by hearkening back to their 90’s youth as London club kids.

On January 31st, Goddard and Rundell are releasing their debut album Be Strong in digital form—it’s the duo’s attempt at creating nothing short of the “perfect party record.” As befits our re-mix culture, The 2 Bears are a group both musically cutting-edge yet religiously reverent to the best base-thumping, house music tradition; Be Strong is a musical bouillabaisse of soul, dance and retro-electronica. And though their name and “furry-friendly” couture advertises the team’s essential tongue-in-cheekiness, The 2 Bears’ music is anything but a gag.
