You Ain’t Getting Topped with That Muffin Top!

Whether in the office or out with clients, a crisp dress shirt always looks great.  It suggests success, education and sexy confidence.  However, these attractive traits can be quickly undermined if you are sporting the dreaded “dress shirt muffin top.”  Unlike in Europe, most American men’s retailers still cut dress shirts boxy a la Brooks Brothers and do not dart or trim the garments to fit the male physique.  The result: even the slimmest of gentlemen look slouchy and sloppy…and nobody is attracted to that.  Talk about a jock block!

Thankfully, the clever boys at 5th and Lamar have taken the liberty of offering you a quick, painless solution to shopping for reasonably priced, slim cut dress shirts for work.  The startup based in Austin, TX caters to the professional man with conservative, high quality textiles perfect for the office and casual Fridays.  Priced affordably from $48-$68 and sized simply in S, M, L and XL, 5th & Lamar is strategically positioned to provide an alternative to those shopping at brands like Banana Republic and Club Monaco.

We recently caught up with 5th and Lamar Co-Founder David Wei.  Scroll down to see what he had to say about the brand and it’s customer!

What was your inspiration to start 5th & Lamar?
It started from a very simple idea really: shirts for guys who are in shape. My co-founder and I used to joke about the muffin tops on our shirts (extra shirt fabric around the waist) and how hard it was to find shirts that were actually slim fitting. One day we decided enough was enough and 5th & Lamar was born.

Where does the name come from?
5th & Lamar stands for the intersection of 5th St and Lamar Blvd in Austin. It’s where the founders lived when 5th & Lamar was started. It’s a lovely little intersection right next to the headquarters of Whole Foods and one of Austin’s best food trucks Lucky’s Puccias.

Describe your client.
We started 5th & Lamar to solve a problem for guys just like us: young professionals who are in shape. Our customers want shirts that look great, feel great, and are reasonably priced. We get a lot of customers from all the US metro areas and especially New York!

What do you think a shirt says about a man?
It’s a window into his soul. Actually, that’s not true. What is true is that people judge others on what they wear, shirts included. It’s important for every man to make an effort, learn some basics about fit, colors, and patterns. At the same time, don’t over-think it, it’s just a shirt! Make sure it fits, make sure you like it, and you will be fine.
